“Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they?” Matthew 6:26 CSB
As I sat at work, I told Jesus I was hungry. The past few years were filled with financial hardship. I struggled to make ends meet. That day, I wasn’t sure how I would eat. The next day was payday, and I had already run out of money. Despite my uncertainty of how Jesus would answer my prayer, I hoped He would come through. I had nowhere else to turn. Feelings of worthlessness crept up as I sat there. Like so many other lies, I believed my worth came from having a good occupation, education, and solid accomplishments, none of which I had. All I could focus on was how to survive.
Shortly after I prayed, a man I worked with walked up. “I got you a sandwich.” He placed an egg-McMuffin on my desk and walked away. This man didn’t know my situation, but Jesus did. His powerful answer to my desperate plea communicated that I am valuable to Him regardless of my occupation, education, or accomplishments. There is nothing I can do to earn or deserve my worth. It simply comes from being a child of God.
Birds cannot sow seed, harvest, or store food away to use as their means of survival, yet God’s hand sustains them without any of these processes. Their value doesn’t lie in their capability to provide what they need for themselves, and neither does ours. If God cares about feeding the birds, He certainly cares about meeting the needs of His children, who are worth much more to Him.
We are infinitely valuable to God because we are His children.
Discover what you can do today to let go of the mindset that your worth comes from anything other than being a child of God.
